Muse from Meta: The AI Assistant That Wants to Do More Than Just Answer Questions

Muse from Meta: The AI Assistant That Wants to Do More Than Just Answer Questions

Muse from Meta: Artificial intelligence assistants are slowly moving beyond simply answering questions, and Meta is now taking that idea a step further with Muse from Meta.

The new personal AI agent is designed to help users with tasks that normally require several steps, such as browsing websites, managing calendars, working with emails, filling out forms and keeping track of ongoing goals.

Instead of just telling users how something can be done, Muse is being built to actually handle parts of the process.

What Is Muse from Meta?

Muse from Meta is a personal AI agent that can understand a user's request, break it down into multiple steps and then work through those steps.

That makes it different from a traditional chatbot. A chatbot might explain how to book a flight or organize a schedule. Muse is designed to take that request and interact with websites or connected services to help complete the task.

The idea is fairly simple: users tell Muse what they want to accomplish, and the AI handles more of the work in the background.

Muse Can Keep Working After You Leave

One of the more interesting features of Muse is its ability to continue working after a user closes the app.

Meta says the agent can monitor goals, track information and return with updates when something changes. That could be useful for tasks that don't need to be completed immediately.

For example, instead of repeatedly checking something yourself, you could ask an AI agent to keep an eye on it and let you know when there is something worth knowing.

This background capability is part of Meta's larger vision for AI assistants that become useful over time rather than only responding to individual questions.

How Does Muse Actually Work?

Meta has created a cloud-based environment called Muse Secure VM, which gives the AI agent its own virtual computer and browser.

This allows Muse to navigate websites and carry out tasks in a controlled environment.

Security is particularly important here because an AI that can browse the internet and interact with online accounts has considerably more power than a chatbot that only generates text.

Meta says Muse also uses a security system called Sentinel, which monitors the agent's activity and controls certain interactions with the internet.

For sensitive actions, users can be asked to approve what Muse is about to do.

Connecting Muse to Everyday Apps

Muse is designed to work with services people already use.

Meta refers to these integrations as Connectors, which can allow the agent to access information from connected apps and services with the user's permission.

Email and calendar services are among the types of tools Muse can work with, while Meta has also demonstrated use cases involving Instagram.

The goal is to make the AI useful across different parts of everyday life rather than keeping it limited to a single application.

It Can Help With Shopping and Other Tasks

Muse is also being positioned as an assistant for practical jobs.

In situations where an online task involves several steps, the agent can potentially navigate the relevant websites and complete portions of the process.

However, Meta says users remain in control of important actions. Activities such as making purchases or sending certain communications can require approval.

That distinction could become increasingly important as AI agents gain access to more personal accounts.

Privacy and User Control

Giving an AI access to email, calendars and other services naturally raises privacy questions.

Meta says Muse has been designed with controls intended to limit what the agent can access. The company says credentials are stored separately, meaning Muse does not directly see users' passwords or payment details.

Users can also manage permissions for connected services and disconnect them when they no longer want Muse to have access.

Meta has also included an activity trail so users can see what the agent has done and what it intends to do.

Where Is Muse Available?

Muse has been introduced across several platforms, including iOS, Android, the web and macOS.

Meta is also working toward bringing the experience to its AI glasses, which could make the assistant more accessible without requiring users to constantly open their phones or computers.

That could eventually make AI agents feel less like standalone apps and more like an always-available digital assistant.

Is Muse Free?

Meta says Muse can be used for free for everyday tasks, although free access comes with usage limits.

The company also offers paid options for people who need greater usage capacity.

This approach gives casual users an opportunity to try the technology while providing heavier users with additional access.

A Bigger Shift in AI

The launch of Muse from Meta comes at a time when the AI industry is moving toward so-called agentic AI.

The difference is important. Earlier generations of AI largely focused on generating answers, writing content or summarising information. AI agents are being designed to take the next step — planning and carrying out actions.

That could eventually change how people use computers.

Instead of opening several websites, checking different apps and completing every step themselves, users could simply describe the outcome they want and let an AI agent handle much of the routine work.

But that convenience also comes with challenges. The more control an AI has over a person's digital life, the more important accuracy, privacy and user approval become.

For Meta, Muse is therefore more than another AI chatbot. It represents the company's attempt to build an AI assistant that can become part of the user's everyday digital life — and, increasingly, actually get things done.
